2012 Olympic gold medalist and UCLA’s volunteer assistant floor coach, Jordyn Wieber, has been hired as the new head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks gymnastics team at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. Hunter Yuracheck, the Director of Athletics and Vice-Chancellor announced the news on Wednesday.
Mark Cook, who coached the Razorbacks for the past 17 years, retired earlier this month.
Wieber started out as a student at UCLA as well as a team manager for the UCLA Bruins’ women’s gymnastics team. Wieber was unable to join the team as a competitor due to being a professional athlete, which was “like a dagger to my heart,” said head coach Valorie Kondos Field.
Wieber was promoted to volunteer assistant coach her senior year of college and proceeded to coach the team on floor exercise, where she succeeded immensely for three years.
Wieber is only 23 years of age but is wise beyond her years. She will most definitely do great things with the Arkansas Razorbacks.
