Frida Esparza, who originally committed to UCLA for the 2019-2020 season, will be deferring attendance for a year in order to help get the Mexico gymnastics team to the Olympics for the first time ever.
Mexico really wants to compete at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and Esparza is one of the country’s biggest hopefuls in helping them do so.
Esparza has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Mexico. Her mom told NBC San Diego that she would love to see her daughter “be a part of history.”
Going to the Olympics has been a dream of Esparza’s since she first started training gymnastics at the age of three. She watched the Olympics on television and said “I want to do that.”
Following her attempt at competing at the Olympics, Esparza will be attending UCLA in the fall of 2020.
